What is
Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry with Dr. Langan allows his patients to relax while undergoing restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. Dental sedation enables patients to overcome anxiety from discomfort up to phobia about even visiting the dentist. Plus, sedation allows you to group various procedures into a single office visit, making it a better use of your time. And in the end, you have little or no recollection about your visit.

If you have an unpleasant memory of visiting the dentist from your childhood, a mishap during a previous restoration, or you may be somewhat embarrassed that you haven’t been keeping up with your regular check-ups. We don’t judge and want to put you at ease.

Experienced and compassionate sedation dentists like Dr. Adam Langan understand your concerns and can make your dental visit completely relaxing and fear-free with the use of sedation dentistry options like IV sedation and conscious sedation. Request a free sedation consultation today!

Is Sedation Dentistry Right For You??

Patients can confuse sedation with pain relief. Our patients don’t feel a thing during any procedures due to our anesthetics. Dr. Langan offers sedation, not for pain, but to help patients deal with strong feelings of fear and anxiety that arise when they visit the dentist. After receiving sedation and completing their treatments, patients often experience a change in the entire way they view dental appointments going forward.

Nervous About Dentistry?

IV Sedation

IV sedation is ideal for those who have severe dental phobia, difficulty remaining still, multiple or surgical treatment needs, or behavioral concerns. Administered intravenously, IV sedation’s near-immediate effects leave you conscious but with little-to-no memory of your procedure. IV sedation offers complete relaxation and may make you feel like you slept through your visit.

Oral Sedation

Ideal for moderate dental anxiety, general aversion to the dental office, or a sensitive gag reflex, oral sedation is a prescriptive sedative pill taken before your appointment time. This method of sedation leaves you feeling very relaxed, calm, and even sleepy, but fully alert and able to respond to our instructions.

Available To All Patients

Nitrous Oxide

Complimentary to all patients, nitrous oxide is ideal for those who experience common dental jitters or minor anxiety. Nitrous oxide is a clear, odorless gas inhaled before and during the procedure. The effects leave you feeling calm and even euphoric. Once the gas is stopped, the effects dissipate quickly and leave you ready to resume normal daily activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Dental Sedation

Dr. Adam Langan is Norfolk, NE’s sedation dentistry expert and will happily guide you to choose the best option for you at a Free Sedation Consultation. We offer 3 effective types of sedation, all of which are good options depending on your anxiety level and the treatment being done. IV Sedation: With IV sedation, Dr. Langan will set up an IV drip which will keep you continuously sedated during your treatment. You will be asleep during the entire procedure and will retain all normal reflexes and breathing throughout the treatment. Because this type of sedation doesn’t wear off immediately, you will need to arrange a ride to and from your appointment. Oral Sedation: With oral sedation, you will be given a small pill to take 1 hour before arriving at your appointment. You will be feeling very drowsy by the time you arrive, so it’s important to arrange a ride to and from our office. Nitrous: With Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas, a mask is placed over your face which allows you to breathe a mixture of oxygen and gas, which relaxes you for the procedure. Since the effects quickly wear off, you can drive yourself home when using this type of sedation.
Dr. Adam Langan and Sedation of Dentistry of Norfolk take your comfort and safety very seriously and closely monitor the dosages and sedation of our patients, before, during, and after our treatment. Your comfort is paramount and sedation dentistry is completely safe, especially in the skilled hands of Dr. Langan and his team.
Dr. Langan offers 3 types of sedation at Sedation Dentistry of Norfolk, IV Sedation, Oral Sedation, and Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) sedation. Depending on your anxiety level or the type of treatment is performed, a different type of sedation might be recommended by Dr. Langan. We offer nitrous oxide (laughing has) complimentary to all patients. Both oral and IV sedation delivers a similar relaxation and a twilight sleep experience where you’re awake but relaxed. It is very common for patients to experiences an amnesia effect afterward where they don’t remember much about their appointment.
Oral sedation is a perfect option for patients who don’t want to use a needle. Before the start of the procedure, Dr. Langan will give you a relaxation pill to help put you at ease. Patients will become very drowsy, but will still be awake and will be able to respond to directions from Dr. Langan. It is possible to increase the dosage for patients who desire more sedation.
For most patients, the effects of oral sedation when getting treatment from Dr. Langan will last from 2-4 hours after the appointment. Thus, they’ll need a ride to and from the appointment. The patient also shouldn’t drive or operate machinery for an additional 12 hours.
Dr. Langan is a certified sedation expert and will make sure you are safe and comfortable the whole time. Oral sedation has similar effects to amnesia. While technically this is a side effect most patients see this as a benefit because they can’t remember the dental appointment. Oral medications can cause headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, and occasionally nausea but these typically pass quickly.
IV Sedation is delivered intravenously rather than with a pill as in Oral Sedation. With IV sedation Dr. Langan can closely monitor your sedation levels and can adjust the levels to give you the optimal level of sedation. For some patients, sedation may wear off almost immediately, but others can feel its effects for several hours afterward. Patients shouldn’t drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after their appointment and will need a ride to and from the appointment.
Patients think they’re “under” as they are when they’re in the hospital during traditional surgery, but with both Oral and IV sedation you’ll be awake but sedated so you’ll be relaxed.
Since the patient is comfortably sedated, Dr. Langan can complete procedures that used to take several appointments to complete. This saves the patient time and money since a single longer appointment is less costly than several short appointments.
Dr. Langan can provide sedation for any procedure the patient is uncomfortable proceeding with from standard dental cleaning to implant placement. Simply ask for sedation and our team will make you feel comfortable and relaxed.
While sedation provides benefits for many people, it’s not right for everyone. Depending on your medical history, Dr. Langan may not recommend sedation. Some chronic conditions may make sedation risky or if medications that the patient takes conflict with the sedation effects it will not be recommended.
